COBOL Turns 51!!!

51 years ago, today, one of the first english-based programming languages – COBOL (Common Business-Oriented Language) was born.

in may 28, 1959 pentagon set up several committees to define an initial language specification. sensing that there’s an opportunity to make this “new” programming language accessible and useful for business, by december they completed the specification and thus the first COBOL compiler was released.

for the IT PINOYs who took computer subjects, we bet they still have COBOL in their curriculum. 
COBOL’s appeal to business programmers was its readability, accessibility and the ease with which it could be used to compute business functions. By 1997, the Gartner Group estimated that 80 percent of the world’s businesses ran on COBOL, with a cumulative total of 200 billion lines of code in existence.

with the advent of newer programming languages however like C++, Java and new technological innovations like the cloud, COBOLs popularity has since waned but nonetheless still alive..
